Frequently Asked Questions:
What is Airbrush Tanning?
The airbrush tanning system in its simplest form, is the distributing of a tan color to the skin utilizing an airbrush delivery system. The compressor forces air out through the end of an airbrush which holds the solution in a separate chamber. As the air rushes past it collects small quantities of the solution which are then deposited onto the skin. The active ingredient is dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and most airbrushing solutions also contain a further external bronzer which begins to show immediately as soon as they have been sprayed. This aids the application as the areas that have already been treated are visible. Therefore the initial color of the skin is determined by the bronzer used.
What Should I wear?
Female clients over the age of 18 may choose to tan in a swim suit or equivalent, topless or in the nude. Male clients may wear boxers, briefs, or a thong if desired, no nudity please. Clients under 18 must have parental approval and must wear a full swimsuit or equivalent.
How Long Will A Tan Last?
Depending on your skin type you will want to tan once a week. To get a good initial base tan I recommend two consecutive sessions, 24-48 hours apart. To keep your base tan dark and glowing, I suggest tanning once a week. Your body constantly 'sloughs off' dead skin cells. This is why natural sun tans fade over a few days. Spray tanning only affects the outer skin layer, so again, as your skin cells are naturally shed, the spray tan will fade. Your tan should last 5-7 days, up 10 days or longer if you look after your skin by moisturizing every day, especially using tan extender lotions. Tan extender products contain the same DHA that is in the airbrush solution, just in a smaller amount. Extenders keep adding the tanning agent gently, prolonging the life of your tan and allowing your tan to fade evenly.
How Long Does It Take To Tan?
It only takes 10-15 minutes to airbrush tan an entire body front and back. You will see color immediately from the cosmetic color in the spray. The tan will continue to develop for the next 8 to 12 hours.
How Does Airbrush Tanning Tan The Skin?
Proteins in the top layer of the skin darken with Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) to produce the appearance of a golden healthy tan. DHA, a colorless sugar which reacts with the amino acids in the dead layers of your skin and over a period of a few hours goes brown, just the same as an apple does when you have bitten it! It produces a tan much like the sun, but without UVA and UVB damage to the skin.
Is there a choice in color?
Yes. DHA comes in different percentages, such as 5%, 8%, 10%, and 12%. The most common 8% is for people with fair/medium skin tones. This is the most subtle and naturally looking tan.
Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?
The solution we use is a non-toxic food grade product. It is approved for ingestion by the FDA and is not known to cause any detrimental affects to a pregnant mother or baby. However, since the proteins of your body may have changed due to the pregnancy, you may not get the tan or color you want. I encourage women who are pregnant to talk to their DR/OBGYN as they would with using any other products.
